| 352 | «b»History «/b»The Record Herald dates back to 1847, when David O. Blair of Mercersburg established The Village Record, a weekly newspaper, in Waynesboro. He hired a relative, William Blair, who chronicled life in Waynesboro every week for 50 years until his death in 1891. Under William Blair's tenure as editor, the town had begun to grow by leaps and bounds as Frick Co. and Landis Tool Co. became international names, and some readers grumbled that Waynesboro was no longer a "village." That's when The Village Record was renamed to The Waynesboro Record. L.E. Yost purchased The Waynesboro Record from William Blair's estate and for nine years competed with the Keystone Gazette, another weekly begun in 1876 by James C. West and W.J.C. Jacobs. The Gazette had a number of owners before Yost acquired it in 1900, along with The Blue Ridge Zephyr, Waynesboro's first permanent daily newspaper. Yost continued to publish both the daily and weekly papers before selling his interests in 1906 to R.C. Gordon. Gordon later also acquired The Evening Herald, which had been published as a competing daily since 1901. The Record and The Evening Herald were merged, with The Record Herald banner first appearing on Nov. 11, 1918, the day on which the armistice ending World War I was signed. Gordon sold the newspaper to Floyd Chalfant in 1925, and The Record Herald remained under the Chalfant family's ownership until it was purchased by American Publishing Co. in 1987. The paper currently is owned by Liberty Group Publishing. A bit of trivia: There have been only two days when The Record herald's presses failed to roll. The first was in July 1863, when Confederate troops under the command of Jubal Early broke into the newspaper office and scattered type all over the floor. The second was after a big snowstorm on January 8, 1996, when Pennsylvania's governor forbade travel on Pennsylvania roads, making delivery impossible. Another tidbit: It was former Record Herald Editor Jess Garber who tipped The Associated Press to the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in 1979, winning him a special citation from the AP. | Source Source: S119 (S119)
